It’s Not As Hard As You Think: Top 5 Myths About Doing a Detox

You know it’s time for a detox.  You haven’t been eating healthy. Your belly is chronically bloated. It takes you a couple cups of coffee in the morning to wake up from the dead. And when the caffeine eventually wears off, your mental clarity and energy are foggy and sluggish, respectively. Your skin is bumpy and dull, and your sleep patterns are erratic.

But some people are intimidated by detox diets. While the thought of coming out the other side of a metabolic reboot sounds appealing, you don’t want to be miserable doing it. “Detoxes” can mean different things to different people. Herbal supplements, colon cleanses, infrared saunas, digestive enzymes, and of course, juice cleanses.

If you’re thinking about doing a detox, here are some common misconceptions.

Detox Myth #1: It’s Too Hard

To some people, the phrase “detox” is synonymous with starvation. But a detox shouldn’t be deficient in nutrients, and it certainly shouldn’t be a lengthy, strict fast. While following an intermittent fasting schedule is great for your health (I do it, and so does Brandon, my husband.), not eating anything for over 24 hours could do you more harm than good.

With my 21 Day Detox, you choose between one, two or three intervals of a 3 day cleanse. During the 3, 6 or 9 days, you’re on a calorie restricted diet. But you’re getting all the nutrients you need to detoxify vital organs and lose weight—without feeling deprived.

On these cleanse days, you drink 4 servings of my Organic Green Drink (16 oz. per serving), a smooth-as-silk cold-blend of 7 certified organic green leafy veggies. You also get 2 packets of my vegan-friendly protein shake (about 20 grams of muscle-building protein per shake) and one Detox Soup for dinner.

Essentially, these cleanse days are a liquid diet. But there’s enough protein and fiber to help your energy levels remain steady and prevent cravings.

Myth #2: You Can Only Have Juice Or Raw Kale

Many people associate cleanse or detox diets with juice programs. If you ever come across a program that offers only juices, whether it’s a 3 day program or a longer one, then run.

Here’s why: most juice programs, even if the drinks are low in sugar (unfortunately, most juice detoxes are very high in sugar), they are woefully deficient in protein and fiber. Pressed juices don’t contain the fiber from the fruit or veggie. And when you have no fiber, your blood sugar levels fluctuate. The result is nasty mood swings. You really need protein, fiber and even some healthy fat to keep you full and maintain your blood sugar at a steady level during your detox.

(By the way, my Organic Green Drink contains only 6 grams of sugar per 16 oz serving, keeping your energy level rock-steady.)

As for the non-cleanse days — either 18 days, 15 days or 12 days depending on how many 3 day cleanses you choose during the 21 Day Detox, you get to enjoy entrees like nachos, wild salmon, mac and cheese, and pesto lasagna, just to name a few.

How can you mack on mac n’ cheese when you’re trying to detoxify your body? When you order my 21 Day Detox, you get access to my recipe book, “Making Healthier Easier,” a PDF download that teaches you how to make your favorite entrees healthy (I use nutritional yeast as a cheese substitute.

I also provide you with an Eat This/Not That chart, and a Healthy Portions guide. When you’re eating dozens of delicious meals that you can take right from my book, and learn exactly what you should eat during a 21 Day Detox, 3 weeks goes by real quick.

Myth #3: You Can Only Drink Water And Detox Drinks

While I do recommend eliminating caffeine during a 21 Day Detox (for all 21 days), that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy other drinks.

On your non-cleanse days (again, it’s either 18, 15 or 12 days, depending on how many 3-day cleanse periods you want to do), you can use my recipe book to easily create craft “mocktails.” How does Watermelon Slush sound? It’s perfect for hot days when you need something sweet and refreshing. Or how about Creamy Green Smoothie, a delicious, filling blend of avocado, spinach, kale, dates, lemon, chia seeds and cinnamon … doesn’t exactly sound like torture, does it?

Myth #4: You Can’t Have Any Sugar Or Dessert

Ideally, starting from right now and everyday for the rest of your life, you will eat a low-sugar diet. But there’s a misconception that when you’re doing a detox, you can’t have any sugar. Technically, that’s not true. All veggies, even green leafy ones, contain a tiny bit of natural sugar.

Sure, you shouldn’t eat anything with added sugars while you’re doing a 21 Day Detox. But even on the non-cleanse days, you still get to feast on sweet-tasting things like berries and even a date or two.

And the best part of my 21 Day Detox is that on non-cleanse days, you can have your cake and eat it, too. That’s right. In my cookbook, you’ll find recipes for Triple Layer Cheesecake, Acai, Chia Seed Pudding, Chocolate Avocado Mousse, and Vanilla ‘Milk’ Shake.

Again, it doesn’t sound exactly like torture, does it? The reason you get to eat like a King while eliminating toxins is that you’ll be swapping out high-inflammatory ingredients such as dairy, for ingredients that aid in the body’s detoxification process, and cause no inflammatory reaction.

Myth #5: It’s Expensive

It’s true that some Detox programs cost thousands of dollars. But with my 21 Day Detox, you can easily lose 30 pounds or more, starting at only $249. That’s less than $12 a day. Not bad for the following:

  • 4 Organic Green Drinks, 2 Protein Shakes and 1 Detox Soup every day during your 3 Day Cleanse interval
  • My Recipe E-Book, Making Healthier Easier, which includes a healthy food pyramid (not the ridiculous one the federal government uses); a list of cleanse approved foods; detox drinks and smoothies; healthy breakfasts; tasty snacks and apps; super soups; sensational salads; easy entrees and sides; sweets and treats
  • Healthy Portions Chart and other handy printouts
  • Unlimited email and phone support

If you’ve been thinking about going on a detox diet but you’re confused, scared, and don’t know how to get started, you’ve come to the right place.

I’ll hold your hand every step of the way. I promise you will transform your body and mind (maybe even your spirit) when the 21 days are over. I also promise you won’t feel like you’re starving or miserable. It will take some dedication on your part. You must be willing to do some healthy meal prep and cooking on your own. But my recipes are real easy to follow and don’t take long to make.

And if you’ve never done a 3-day calorie-restricted liquid diet cleanse, it might seem a little challenging to go that long without any solid food. But with the protein shakes and detox soup dinner, you’ll do just fine and you’ll be buzzing with natural energy after the 3 day interval.

Yes–If You Have Support From “The Happy Pancreas”

For those with diabetes, having to constantly monitor blood sugar can be overwhelming. For people with no blood sugar issues, doing a cleanse is a great way to get rid of toxins that cause water weight retention. But are cleanses safe for those with diabetes? If you do one under the guidance of “The Happy Pancreas”, the answer is a resounding yes!

When I launched Chef V several years ago, my intention was to introduce an easy (and great-tasting) way for people to get their daily dose of nutrient-dense, disease-preventing veggies.

But I’ll admit, even as a certified nutritional therapist, I didn’t give much thought about the impact Chef V products would have on the 1.25 million people in this country that are living with type 1 diabetes.

After all, it’s easy to overlook Type 1 diabetes. In comparison to the 30-plus million people with type 2 diabetes, type 1 accounts for only 5% or so of this blood sugar disease.

If you are one of those with type 1 diabetes, I can only imagine how challenging it is managing this potentially-deadly condition. Having to constantly monitor your blood sugar levels is enough of a burden.

However, what if your belly is bloated, your skin isn’t radiant and healthy-looking and your energy is low—and you have type 1 diabetes? These problems affect most people. But the physical and emotional effects are magnified if you have to prick yourself with insulin everyday.

Those without diabetes can easily do a cleanse to reboot metabolism. But what about those living with type 1 diabetes? Is there a way to safely and effectively do a cleanse?

Thanks to Whitney Lewis, a Chef V customer living with type 1 (make that, thriving!), it’s never been easier. To date, Whitney has successfully finished five Chef V cleanses. Inspired to make life easier for those with type 1, and to share her challenges living with the disease, Whitney created the blog, Happy Pancreas.

About 2 ½ years ago, Whitney was invited by a friend to do a cleanse. Along with her friend’s support, she was able to complete it. Whitney realize how important accountability and community were for people with type 1 diabetes. That’s why Whitney, besides creating the Happy Pancreas blog, is also introducing the Low Sugar Organic Juice Cleanse with Whitney and Detox Accountability Group

I’ll tell you more about Whitney’s program in just a bit. But first, a little 411 is in order….

What is type 1 diabetes?

Approximately 5 years ago, Whitney was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. If you’re not familiar with the disease or the difference between it, I’ll briefly fill you in.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease. That means the body attacks itself. In the case of type 1 diabetes, the body’s immune system response leads to the inability of the cells in the pancreas to create the blood-sugar-controlling hormone, insulin.

Without insulin, sugar in the blood cannot reach the cells. Cells need glucose (sugar) to function properly. Without enough glucose, cells die. And when blood sugar levels fall too low, the function of the  brain, which depends almost entirely on glucose as a source of energy, can go haywire, causing, dizziness, confusion, and even coma and death in severe cases.

By comparison, type 2 diabetes, is mostly a lifestyle disease, resulting from eating too many foods rich in added sugars or refined carbohydrates (although genetics can also be a contributing factor in developing the disease.) Unlike type 1 diabetes, type 2 is not an autoimmune disease.

Some people think the cause of type 1 diabetes is sugar. However, the true cause is mostly genetic.

What’s It Like Living with Type 1 Diabetes?

As Whitney says in this video for her invite to the Low Sugar Juice Cleanse, this disease is a lot.

You have to constantly manage your blood sugar and be aware of everything you put in your body.

Every day, you have to manually inject insulin to keep blood sugar levels in a normal range—and to stay alive.

Type 1 diabetes is an incurable disease. But Whitney manages it with a tongue-in-cheek response, or more accurately, a hand-in-pocket solution: she carries a pancreas-shaped purse that contains her syringes and insulin.

Those with type 1 diabetes must monitor their blood sugar levels before meals and workouts, and other situations whenever the body would normally create insulin.

“Lots and lots of pokes every day … it’s not easy,” says Whitney, adding, “It can be extremely daunting…. With type 1 diabetes you must always be on and aware of your ever-changing (and sometimes dangerous) blood sugar levels. It throws a wrench in almost every ordinary situation and can often leave you feeling hindered and limited in trying things ‘normal’ people try.”

But Whitney’s type 1 diagnosis about 5 ½ years ago has led to a silver lining. Living with type 1 diabetes has led to a “passion and love for helping people with this autoimmune condition.”

Low Sugar Juice Cleanse With Whitney

As Whitney says, ultimately, if you have type 1 diabetes and want to meet your health goals, the best way to do so is with accountability and community support.

That’s why with Whitney’s coaching and Chef V low-sugar juice cleanses (only 5 grams of sugar per serving of Organic Green Drink) it’s never been easier to successfully complete a cleanse (1, 3 or 5 days).

And with Whitney’s Happy Pancreas 7-day Private Group Accountability Access you’ll get the support you need to safely and successfully finish a cleanse, even if you have type 1 diabetes.

“Doing a cleanse [if you’re living with type 1] can feel overwhelming and daunting,” says Whitney. “I want to teach you not only ‘the why’ it’s important to do a cleanse, but to support and create community. If you feel like you’re hitting a wall and you can’t complete it, I’ll be there to guide you through to the end.”

The reason Whitney decided to do her first cleanse a few years ago is because she was experiencing digestive issues and cravings. She was also not able to easily lose excess weight, and she was sensitive to certain foods.

It’s not like Whitney wasn’t exercising and eating clean (she was) but because of type 1 diabetes, inflammation makes it easier to suffer from these symptoms. That’s why Whitney believes in the power of Chef V Low Sugar Cleanses.  Whether it’s your first or 5th cleanse, having the community support is critical for success.

Why Chef V Organic Green Drink Is Best For Type 1 Diabetes

Chef V Organic Green Drink, the foundation of the Cleanse/Detox programs I created, offer many nutritional benefits. As Whitney points out on her support group page, for type 1 diabetes, the biggest benefit is from the fiber in the Organic Green Drink. Whereas blended juices contain virtually no fiber, thus causing the juice to be absorbed into your bloodstream very quickly, leading to mood swings, energy loss, and extra stress when managing your diabetes, Chef V’s Organic Green Drink contains hardly any sugar. And super important, it contains the pulp (fiber) that’s necessary to keep blood sugar levels steady.

When you think of a juice cleanse or detox diet, does protein come to mind? If not, it should. But not just any protein. In fact, many protein powders can be toxic to your health. Learn why you need protein if you’re cleansing and what kind is best for your body. Here’s what you need to know.

Doing a Cleanse? Why Protein Powder is important

All animals must eat protein every day to survive. Us wild human animals included. Now I’m not saying you need to eat a 72-ounce T-bone steak every day for health. I’d feel very sorry for your colon if you did that.

You don’t even need a small bite of filet mignon every day. In fact, there’s no proof that you need animal protein for optimal health. Any natural vegan protein will do, including nuts and seeds.

Here’s a fun nutrition fact to chew on: the human body can’t live more than 70 days without eating any protein. Give or take a day. I haven’t personally tested this theory. And I don’t recommend you try either.

But if you’re reading this because you’re researching the best juice cleanse, there’s a very good chance you’re going to kill yourself just a little bit. And thanks to me, I’m going to save you from that. I’ll explain how in just a sec….

You see, if you go ultra low carb like the keto diet, no problem. Some of that dietary fat you’re feasting on will be converted into glucose (sugar) for your brain to feed on. Even protein can be converted into glucose. If you eat that 72-ounce steak, there’s a good possibility some of the cow meat will turn into sugar and get stored as fat.

But your body can’t store excess protein. It also can’t make protein from carbs or fats or anything else. That’s why you need to eat protein everyday for optimal health.

Your lean muscle tissue, hair, skin, and nails all need adequate protein to look healthy.

So if you’re checking out some different cleanse or detox diet options out there, here’s the big problem with them….

Most cleanse programs contain zero protein. Instead, all juice detoxes are is a slick marketing trick for selling you fruit juice with loads of sugar. That’s the opposite of cleansing! (Compare my cleanse program to popular juice cleanses here.)

Think how brittle your hair and nails will look after going several days without protein.

Some people think that it’s not good to have protein during a cleanse. Why? They assume it’s bad for the digestive system. Well, in a way, that’s true. But only if it’s processed meat or unhealthy protein powder.

I’m here to steer you in a healthy direction and recommend a protein powder to take while doing a cleanse.

Vegan Protein Powder For Cleansing

Multi-colored, attractive bottles of juice may be effective for marketing. But they’re not good for health. You see, many commercial juice cleanse programs include about a half dozen different kinds of juice, each a different color of the rainbow. But each containing 20 grams or more of sugar and zero protein.

As far as I’m concerned (as a certified nutritional therapist), you need just one color of juice: green. Green-leafy vegetables are the most nutrient-dense foods and play a critical part in the body’s detoxification process. But even my cold-blended Organic Green Drinks don’t have any protein.

That’s why several years ago, I brainstormed on a protein powder that would be healthy for everybody, including people doing a cleanse. The result is my Organic Vegan Chocolate Protein Shake and my Vegan Cinnamon Protein Shake. With 17 grams of high-absorbance pea protein per packet, brittle nails don’t stand a chance.

You’ll have to trust me (or the 5-star reviews on Yelp) that the chocolate shake tastes great. How does it taste good without adding gobs of sugar? My recipe uses organic cacao powder, stevia, and monk fruit extract. Stevia and monk fruit are natural, calorie-free sweeteners.

Pea protein has become more popular. When I decided to use pea protein a few years ago, I never thought it would be just as effective for the weightlifting community. But check it out. This study shows that it produces the same increase in muscle thickness as whey protein.

There are a couple reasons I don’t use whey in my Protein Shake for my cleanse programs. First, many whey protein powders are contaminated with heavy metals. (Says this Harvard research report.) And also, whey protein is not good for people with lactose intolerance. True, I could have used whey protein isolate, which contains close to zero lactose, but I just don’t trust how whey is manufactured. And I don’t think it’s good for cleansing overall.

What About Soy Protein Powder For Cleansing?

Some people are concerned about soy protein’s effect on women. This is because soy is a phytoestrogen, and if the body has too much estrogen absorbed, it could produce a hormonal cancer such as breast cancer.

Thus far, there are no studies linking soy protein powder to breast cancer. However, I do believe that processed soy is not good for health. Also, I think there is something to the too much estrogen theory. After all, it’s not just the food supply from soybeans that causes estrogen dominance, it’s all the plastics and everyday cleaners that can mimic the effects of estrogen.

Protein Powder: It’s Not Just For Muscle Heads

You don’t need to buy one of those huge tubs of protein powders that huge weightlifters buy for bulging biceps.

If you’re not doing a cleanse, I really don’t think you need any protein powder at all. But if you are going to do a cleanse, you absolutely do need some protein if you don’t want your muscles to waste away and your immune system to get weak.

Dietary protein plays a major role in virtually every thing that happens in your cells. And not only that, protein helps you feel full. If you go even a few days without it, just having juice will make your blood sugars go up and down. You’ll get tired and cranky.

Look, even if you don’t choose one of my cleanses, I do highly encourage you to consume a little high-quality vegan-protein every day (hemp and brown rice are also good choices).

A little protein every day goes a long way for health.

Veggie Juice vs Greens Powder: Which Is Better For Your Health?

If you’re thinking about doing a cleanse or just want an easy way to get more veggies in your diet, both veggie juices and green powders have become very popular. But if you have to pick one, which is better?

I’m not going to string you along and have you wait with bated breath until the end to reveal the answer.

Nope, the clear-cut better solution for getting your daily dose of disease-fighting and weight-loss kick-starting nutrients is…. (A tiny bit of anticipation here….)

Veggie juice.

Especially cold-blended Organic Green Drinks.

Here’s why veggie juice beats powdered Greens….

Poisonous Powder

For starters, some powders may be poisonous. According to ConsumerLab.com, which is an independent research group that tests supplements for purity and labeling accuracy, some brands are tainted with heavy metals. Heavy metal is great if you want to do some head-banging while doing a CrossFit workout. But heavy metals are something you definitely don’t want in your veggies. ConsumerLab, in 2016, found that at least 3 brands were contaminated with heavy metal. Barlean’s Greens is one of  the most well-known veggie powders on the market. ConsumerLab revealed that it contained 6 mcg (micrograms) of lead in each 8 gram serving.

If you were to purchase a powder called, “Greens Organics + Superfood Raw” you’d probably feel pretty confident that it’s a safe, healthy product. However, ConsumerLab found that this product contained even more lead than Barlean’s (6.5 mcg per serving). The third product that tested positive for heavy metals was HealthForce SuperFoods Vitamineral Green. With that mouthful of a product name, you also get 3.6 mcg of lead and 13 mcg arsenic.

One more brand of powder tested positive for poison: Naturo Science Green Food – Berry Flavored, which had almost 4 mcg of lead per scoop.

While these test results were from 2016, I don’t know about you, but personally, I’d be very skeptical about trusting these brands again.

Let’s give the benefit of the doubt to green powders and assume that the vast majority of them are not contaminated with heavy metals. Take that little inconvenient fact away and is it a toss up whether veggie juices or powders are better? Nope. Veggie drinks still come way out ahead….

Below, a blender from the Chef V kitchen ready to be made into Green Drink – yes, those are the fresh, organic ingredients you get from Chef V!

Actually, if I may, a final word on contaminated powders: the problem might be worse. A recent U.S. News and World Report  article says that one third of greens powders marketed as “healthy, healthy, healthy” were found to be contaminated with heavy metals. Yikes.

Fresh Is Best!

When you buy green powder, who knows how old the veggies are?

Some brands of powders freeze-dry the veggies. I don’t know about you but I never ever put any fresh veggies in the freezer, do you? So why would you want a powder of freeze-dried veggies. Can you imagine a restaurant in Italy serving pasta with freeze-dried tomatoes? Freeze-drying might be great for wild salmon. But freeze-drying veggies kills both the taste and the nutritional content.

To get a powder to taste palatable, some brands will add sugar to it. And many times, fillers such as soy lecithin or rice bran get added to powders to bulk them up. If you’re trying to lose weight and detox, the last thing you need is any bulking agents.

[/fusion_text][fusion_code]PGRpdiBzdHlsZT0icGFkZGluZzoxcHg7IGNvbG9yOiNmZmZmZmY7Ij4uPC9kaXY+[/fusion_code][fusion_imageframe image_id=”13774|full” max_width=”” style_type=”none” blur=”” stylecolor=”” hover_type=”none” bordersize=”” bordercolor=”” borderradius=”” align=”center” lightbox=”no” gallery_id=”” lightbox_image=”” lightbox_image_id=”” alt=”green drink alternatives” link=”” linktarget=”_self” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_direction=”left” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_offset=””]https://chefvblog.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/2019/03/proxy.duckduckgo-1.jpg[/fusion_imageframe][fusion_code]PGRpdiBzdHlsZT0icGFkZGluZzoxcHg7IGNvbG9yOiNmZmZmZmY7Ij4uPC9kaXY+[/fusion_code][fusion_text columns=”” column_min_width=”” column_spacing=”” rule_style=”default” rule_size=”” rule_color=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=””]

And according to this article on GQ’s website, some powders include in the ingredients, “propriety blend.” Why is this a problem? The article explains that this is a loophole for the company to not have to list specific ingredients, such as a food coloring or other additive. Don’t you want to know exactly what you’re putting in your body?

But when you buy veggie juice from a reputable brand (ahem, like Chef V) that uses veggies from their own organic farm (like we have) or buys fresh produce from an organic farmer (like I do) and cold-blends the juice on site (such as in our new store in suburban NYC), thus preserving the nutrients (yup, check … we do that), you know it’s a healthy product….

Juice Cleanse Comparison: How Chef V Compares

Not all green powders are created equal. That’s certainly true of green juices as well. In fact, the healthiest green powder is better than the worst juice cleanse. That’s because many juice cleanses out there hardly contain any veggies; they are mostly all fruit juice. As Consumer Reports explains, there’s a major problem with many juice cleanse programs. First and foremost, the sugar content of many juice brands is sky high. See how Organic Green Drink–only 3 grams of sugar per serving–compares with the competition here.

And if you’re looking to do a cleanse, there’s something else you should keep in mind….

Even if the veggie juice is super healthy, you’re going to need more than juice to keep you going. It doesn’t matter if it’s as little as a 3-day cleanse. Just having juice for 3 days will likely make you feel famished. You also need protein and real food to satisfy your belly.

That’s why on each day while you’re on the Chef V Cleanse,  in addition to getting 4 servings of Green Drink, you also get:

  •  2 (two) Chocolate Vegan Protein Shake packet: 20 grams per serving
  • 1 (one) container of Detox Soup: Sweet Potato Curry or Carrot Ginger Zing: rich in protein and fiber, tastes like homemade because it is!

Speaking of powder vs. fresh, there are some other cleanse programs out there that include soup. But some of the ones I’ve seen are powdered soup mix. I’ll put my homemade Detox Soup against powdered soup in a taste test any day!

As for fresh protein vs. powdered, protein powder as a supplement is a different story. After all, besides adding a raw egg to your homemade smoothie or Chef V Green Drink, it’s the only way to get a major protein source. (When you’re doing a cleanse, I don’t recommend consuming raw eggs.)

Look, I get it, powdered greens you can buy at a supermarket might seem like an easy way to get your daily dose of veggies. But powdered veggies is nowhere as near as beneficial for you as fresh, organic, whole food veggies. And besides, if it’s convenience you want, convenience you shall have. I’ll deliver Organic Green Drinks, Vegan Protein Shakes and Detox Soups right to your front door (not personally, although it would be awesome to meet you).

Ready for a full-body detox but not sure how to do it? We’ve made it easy for you. Here is a breakdown of three simple objectives to help promote detoxification, each paired with an easy and delicious recipe to help get you started!

Between holidays, birthday parties, and the stress of everyday life, the food we eat can often leave us feeling desperate for detox. But fear not! Did you know your body has an entire organ devoted to cleansing? Meet your liver: your slimy, fleshy friend on a mission to keep you clean! This incredible piece of metabolic machinery filters all of the substances that enter your body. In addition to converting the food we eat into useful compounds, your liver also absorbs the toxins we are exposed to and converts them into a harmless byproduct, or makes sure they are excreted from the body.

However, the mere existence of the human liver is not an excuse to completely abandon our efforts to eat well! Constantly barraging your liver with foods that are high in refined fats and sugars not only creates a lot of hard work for the poor little guy, but can also potentially cause irreversible damage.

How/Why: Antioxidants

What your FOOD can do for YOU: Fight Free Radicals

Free Radicals are compounds with a certain chemical structure that can cause damage to our cells upon exposure. These fierce molecules not only come from outside sources like pollution and household chemicals, but are also made naturally inside of our body. Don’t panic! You can help keep your cells safe and sound by eating a diet that is rich in foods that contain antioxidants. Think of antioxidants like the antidote to free radicals. Compounds like Vitamin C and other nutrients change the structure of free radicals so that they can no longer threaten our healthy cells. All fresh fruits and vegetables contain antioxidants and other phytochemicals that help keep our bodies healthy. Getting as much variety as possible will help, and the fresher the better! Antioxidants and beneficial plant compounds will start to break down the moment that produce is picked. Choose fresh, local, and organic sources whenever possible.

What your FOOD can do for YOU: Reduce Inflammation

Inflammation is a natural phenomenon. Our immune system actually causes inflammation in order to fight illness, heal from an injury, or prevent infection. However, too much inflammation can be a bad thing. The more inflamed we are, the harder it is for our organs to function properly, impairing their ability to processes nutrients and clear toxins from the body. This is why chronic inflammation can lead to disease. Fortunately, there are many ways to reduce inflammation by choosing the right foods. Omega-3 fatty acids play an essential role in decreasing inflammation within the body by balancing the effect of another fatty acid: Omega-6. How does this all happen? Processed foods, refined grains, and sugar all contain high amounts of Omega-6 fatty acids: the compounds that promote inflammation. Thus, when cleansing, eating foods that are rich in anti-inflammatory Omega-3s will help maintain a balanced ratio of 3s:6s, allowing your body’s immune system to function properly and avoid becoming overactive. Vitamin D also plays a big role in decreasing inflammation. Vitamin D can bind to receptors inside your cells and directly reduce the immune system’s production of inflammatory compounds.

What your FOOD can do for YOU: Feed Your Gut!

Did you know that our bodies are composed of more bacterial cells than actual human cells? We are a host to a whole suite of living organisms, collectively referred to as the microbiome. We hear a lot about how probiotic-containing foods like yogurt and kombucha may help our gut bacteria flourish, or keep pathogenic bacteria at bay. These friendly bugs help regulate a variety of metabolic processes and play an important role in detoxification. Research shows that probiotic cultures can help regulate our immune system and promote a healthy gut, however, not a lot is currently known about what kind of probiotics are particularly helpful, or how much we need to consume in order to stay healthy. But, what we do know is that we have trillions of bacteria that already live in our gut! These are probiotics, just like what you might get if you pop a pill or chug a kombucha. All we have to do is feed them the right stuff so that they can grow, thrive, and help keep you healthy. Guess what they eat? Fiber! That’s right, all that “indigestible” stuff from your fruits and veggies, your probiotic colonies munch on that and produce all kinds of byproducts that keep you looking and feeling incredible. You often hear these referred to as “prebiotics”. So, the simple solution to keeping your gut clean: fruits and veggies… the more the better!

[/fusion_text][fusion_text columns=”” column_min_width=”” column_spacing=”” rule_style=”default” rule_size=”” rule_color=”” hide_on_mobile=”small-visibility,medium-visibility,large-visibility” class=”” id=””]

Certain foods are particularly high in prebiotics, including garlic, leeks, and onions. This delicious soup packs them all, and also provides a mega dose of amazing greens and citrus to keep your good gut bugs happy.

I apologize for using a sensationalized headline. But there’s lots of truth to it. In case you haven’t heard, a recall of romaine lettuce has been issued by both the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), following an outbreak of E. Coli poisoning in 11 States and Canada, where combined, as I write this, 50 people have been poisoned. Although no deaths have been reported with this most recent outbreak, this past spring, there were five deaths attributed to the worst E. Coli poisoning outbreak in a decade.

The latest E. Coli poisoning has seen 13 people hospitalized during the month of October, including one who developed kidney failure. Officials still aren’t exactly sure from where the outbreak emanated. Both the CDC and FDA are advising consumers not to eat any romaine lettuce because the source of the outbreak has yet to be identified.

So if you’re eating out and Caesar salad is your fav, order the mixed greens instead.

The Real Reason Why Romaine Lettuce Isn’t In Chef V Green Drink

Almost every week on my blog, I extol the virtues of green leafy veggies. And more than that, I’ve built a small business empire delivering organic Green Drinks that contain 7 certified-organic green leafy veggies. Thankfully, romaine isn’t one of them. Otherwise, the $&!* would be hitting the fan right now, haha!

But years ago, I made the decision not to include romaine in my ingredients for Green Drink, for two primary reasons. First, although romaine has some nutritional value, it’s at the low end of the totem pole in comparison to other leafy greens.

Chard, one of the 7 leafy greens in Green Drink contains more calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, manganese, selenium, phosphorous and zinc than romaine lettuce.

But the biggest reason I’ll never add romaine to my Green Drink is it’s far more susceptible to E. coli contamination than other leafy greens. A big reason for this is how it’s grown. Romaine is mostly grown in Arizona and California, where irrigation water used on romaine fields can become tainted with bacteria from cows. But it’s not like romaine is the only green leafy crop grown in California. Spinach and kale are as well, the latter of which is also in Green Drink. However, kale leaves are tougher and heartier and more resilient against E. Coli.

Healthy Alternatives to Romaine

If you love Caesar salads and substituting romaine for another lettuce is like a carnivore’s worst nightmare of having to eat pea-protein burgers instead of beef, just be patient. In time, the recall will be over.

In the meantime, I suggest skipping romaine lettuce altogether, even long after the recall is officially removed. That’s because there are much healthier greens to eat. And before I list a few of them, let me just say that washing romaine lettuce in water will not get rid of the E. Coli bacteria. (I’ve read that washing it can actually make it worse.)

Kale, collard greens, chard, dandelion greens, and parsley are all featured in my Green Drink. The easiest way to get the benefits of these super greens without having to shop, chop and clean up is to drink 16 0z. of Green Drink a day. If you want to be super healthy, you can start your day off by drinking my Green Drink and then for lunch and/or dinner, have a salad with some of these leafy greens.

5 Reasons Not To Buy Bagged Produce

Try to buy all your leafy greens from a local farmer’s market. Although very convenient and inexpensive, especially from markets like Trader Joe’s ($1.99 for a bag of organic spinach), here are a few reasons why you should never buy bagged greens:

  • It doesn’t taste as good as fresh (and it might be several days old by the time you purchase it)
  • Not as nutrient rich if it’s bagged (because it’s older)
  • Bagged produce is water-intensive (triple washed is not environmentally friendly; especially if it’s grown in dry California)
  • More likely to have harmful bacteria
  • Plastic is not environmentally friendly

Moreover, when you buy packaged produce from the store, do you really feel a connection to the food? Isn’t it a better feeling to buy produce from a farmer’s market? I know it is for me. And for every single bottle of Green Drink my business sells (tens of thousands every year), all the green leafy veggies are grown on small local farms; we never use bagged produce. Yes, I know farmer’s market produce is more expensive, but consider cutting out other things in your budget you don’t really need. Besides, isn’t the fresh taste worth the extra price? It is to me.

So if you’re just reading about this romaine recall for the first time and you’re nervous because you have some romaine in your refrigerator, don’t worry. Just follow this advice: place it in a bag, seal the bag, and throw it in the garbage. Make sure you then wash the area in the fridge where the romaine was sitting with some all-natural cleaner and warm soapy water. According to the CDC, if you want to be extra diligent, sanitize your entire fridge with a solution of 1 tablespoon of liquid bleach in 1 gallon of water after washing with the warm soapy water.

I’ve added a couple romaine-free salad recipes for you below. Check them out….

CHEF V’S SENSATIONAL SALAD #1 (With No Romaine)
SUPER FOOD POWER SALAD

Chef V’s Tip:

One thing I like to do with kale is to squeeze fresh lemon juice on it and let it sit a few minutes. The acid in the juice helps to soften and wilt the greens, making them a little tastier.

Ingredients:

  • 1 lemon, juiced
  • 4 cups chopped green kale or baby kale
  • 1 ripe avocado, diced
  • ½ cup pomegranate seeds
  • ½ cup red kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • Raw pine nuts, or use your fav!

Method:

Squeeze the lemon juice onto the chopped kale and let it sit a few minutes. Then mash the avocado into the greens. Sprinkle with pomegranate seeds, kidney beans, and your favorite nuts, and serve.

SENSATIONAL SALAD RECIPE #2 (without Romaine):

CHEF V’S ANTIOXIDANT LOVE SALAD

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon cold-pressed olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
  • 1 large red chard leaf, chopped
  • 1 cup chopped red leaf lettuce
  • 1 small raw beet, grated
  • ½ cup raspberries
  • ¼ cup pomegranate seeds
  • ¼ cup raw walnuts, chopped

Method:

In a bowl, toss the olive oil and vinegar with the greens. Plate and top with beets, raspberries, pomegranate seeds, and chopped walnuts.

Pomegranate seeds are so yummy. They are sweet and tart and add a delicious crunch to any dish. They have lots of fiber and Vitamins C and K. Sprinkle them on your favorite salads and soups, or toss them into your next smoothie.

Mr. Coconut says: “Eat healthy this holiday – woof!”

Healthy Thanksgiving recipes that taste just like the real, gluttonous thing? Sound too good to be true? Eat until your belly’s content this turkey day without sacrificing taste or mouth-feel.

Why is it so easy to gain weight on Thanksgiving?

According to the Calorie Control Council, the average person consumes over, get this … 4,500 calories on Thanksgiving! And wait until you read this next statistic about Thanksgiving meals. It might just give you a coronary: the average meal on Thanksgiving contains well over 2oo grams of fat.

As a certified nutritional therapist, I advocate eating healthy fats. But c’mon, 200-plus grams! That’s cray-cray, not to mention the fats eaten at a typical Thanksgiving meal aren’t healthy fats. On the contrary, the fats as well as the carbs eaten during most Thanksgiving meals trigger inflammation. It’s easy to gain weight. But it’s much harder to lose weight, especially if the weight gain is caused by inflammation. All that sugar, dairy and fat is going to overload your system and make it difficult for your liver to detox.

Healthy Cranberry Sauce

Regular cranberry sauce is poison. It’s so high in sugar, no wonder most people need to pass out after eating it. In fact, one cup of canned cranberry sauce contains over 400 calories, virtually all of it coming from sugar: 105 grams! And not the healthier, natural fruit sugar. Most of the sugar in cranberry sauce is added. Now, you might think that nobody eats a whole cup of cranberry sauce in one sitting. That’s true. But think about how many people have seconds or thirds. Even a quarter cup of regular cranberry sauce contains a whopping 25 grams of sugar. That’s enough to skyrocket your blood sugar.

So how do I make cranberry sauce healthy. Click here for the recipe.

I’ll give you a hint of what I use. To sweeten the organic cranberries, I use coconut sugar. Coconut sugar is much better for your health because it doesn’t spike your blood sugar levels.

Take a look below. Doesn’t it look just like the real thing? And in my opinion, my cranberry sauce tastes better than traditional Thanksgiving. When the only sugar you eat is from natural sources like fruit, eating something with added sugar tastes artificial and gross. If you’re used to eating foods with added sugar like ice cream, cookies, cakes, etc., consider doing our 21-day detox. You’ll be amazed how in just three weeks you can totally reset your taste buds. After the 21 days, you’ll never crave junk food.

Gluten-free Vegan Gravy

Three servings of gravy, which is what the average person consumes on Thanksgiving contains over 200 calories. Now 200 calories might not sound like much but with everything else on your plate, those extra calories add up around the mid section. But one of my all-time favorite healthy thanksgiving recipes transforms gravy from an artery-clogging condiment into a healthy homemade comfort food. To make this healthy recipe makeover, I use gluten-free flour from Bob’s Red Mill, along with olive oil and other healthy ingredients. Click here for Vegan, Gluten-Free Easy Gravy.

Sweet Potato Puree

You just can’t have Thanksgiving without mashed potatoes. But regular mashed potatoes are very starchy. That means the starch quickly converts into sugar. That’s more bad news for your gut. But this healthy Thanksgiving recipe for mashed potatoes uses the nutritiously-superior sweet potato. Instead of regular milk, I use almond or coconut milk. I swear to you that my sweet potato mash will have the same starchy mouth-feel as regular mashed potatoes. But this version contains way more minerals and is lower in calories.

The Best Pumpkin Pie Recipe – and Good for you Too!

And last but not least, dessert! Yeah, I might seem like a health nut but I love dessert just like anybody else. But I don’t like the brain-fog and bloated feeling that comes from eating dessert with tons of sugar and dairy. So how do I make the classic Thanksgiving dessert, pumpkin pie taste so good while being healthy? Click here to find out.

Have a wonderful healthy holiday!

Even with all these Thanksgiving makeovers, I highly recommend going for a 10-15 minute walk after you eat a large meal. Just a 10-minute walk can lower your blood sugar levels. Invite your friends and family to walk with you. Tell them they’ll feel much better than if they just plop down on the couch and watch football. But if you eat all these healthy Thanksgiving recipes, chances are you’ll feel much lighter. So you won’t feel like passing out like everybody else.

Love,

Chef V
